Initial Events of the Romantic Evening
It began with the calm and serenity of the Daigoji Temple, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site that has an excellent pond, pleasant pagodas, and red bridges that hang in the air through the seasons. It was earlier in the morning, and the sun was shining through the trees, and all was yellow and golden.
The crossing of the Daigoji bridge was met with laughter and silent anticipation as the couple crossed the bridge. Roop breathed and sank to his knees.
There was something of a silence in the world: the rustling of the leaves, the swish of the water, and the very expression of utter astonishment and pleasure on the face of Manvz. It was rough, personal, and thoroughly honest, a pure expression of their relationship.
I photographed all the heartbeats of those seconds: that feeling in their eyes, the fidgety smile, and the hug that ensued. All of the pictures captured the content, silence, and sincerity that they experienced together.

Gion by Night – A Cinematic Contrast
When the sun vanished for the night behind the hills of Kyoto, Roop and Manvz transformed into fancy evening attire and walked into Gion, one of the most picturesque neighborhoods in Kyoto.
The setting of the movie, Gion, with its winding streets, warm lantern light, narrow alleys, and view of Yasaka Pagoda, is a romantic yet cinematic place that is to be contrasted with the stasis of Daigoji.
The couple was drifting hand in hand under the lights of lanterns in the alleys as directed by me, trying to occasionally break my silence to smile at the man and laugh.
The photos were all warm, capturing the golden-colored light cast by the cobblestone-paved streets, the soft and mildly humming atmosphere of the nightfall around them, and the unchanging chemistry that kept them united.
The Gion engagement session was about making their story; it was not just a surprise but an experience. Their actions were lit with diffused light, between a tender grip and a stolen kiss under a lamp in the street.
There was something in each image that unveiled their other side: light-hearted, down-to-earth, and inexhaustibly in love.
The lesson ended at a place close to the Yasaka Pagoda, with its high-profile silhouette in contrast to the setting sun. As the pagoda echoed low in the distance, Roop and Manvz had spent a moment together, which was as though they were in a vacuum of time – a suitable end to a day that had started so wonderfully well with such exquisite exposure.
