Dominic & Felicia’s surprise proposal in Okinawa
Dominic and Felicia, a couple from Singapore, chose Cape Zanpa on Okinawa's west coast for a surprise proposal in July, trading a crowded postcard backdrop for quiet cliffs and open sea.
They'd been looking for somewhere beachside with real scenic weight but without the crowds, and Okinawa kept coming up. Cape Zanpa made sense the moment we scouted it: limestone cliffs dropping straight into the East China Sea, a lighthouse standing alone against the horizon, and none of the tour-bus traffic that follows the more famous coastlines further south. It's the kind of place that photographs like it's been waiting for you.
The proposal itself was engineered as a surprise trip, and it worked. Felicia had no idea what was coming. When it happened, right there on the cliffs with the wind and the water doing exactly what we'd hoped, the reaction was everything you want to capture: pleasantly surprised, visibly touched, and completely present in the moment rather than performing for the camera.
What made the day, though, was what came after. Sarah, who shot this one for the team, spent the rest of the session simply playing: trying different angles, different light, different ways of using that coastline, with the couple fully in on the experiment. That kind of ease only happens when nobody's watching the clock, and it shows in the images. As the couple put it afterward, "100% recommend for anyone else considering the same experience."
Days like this are why Okinawa deserves more attention from couples planning a Japan proposal or elopement. It sits outside the usual Kyoto and Tokyo circuit, with its own light, its own coastline, and a stillness that's increasingly hard to find elsewhere in Japan.
